Overview

Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) is the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities.

LPH has over 400 active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. It became a part of the National Communication Association in 1988, and the association’s official honor society in July 1995.

LPH is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) whose mission is to build a visibly cohesive community of national and international honor societies, individually and collaboratively exhibiting excellence in scholarship, service, programs, and governance.

LPH represents what Aristotle described in The Rhetoric as three ingredients of persuasion: logos (Lambda), meaning logic; pathos (Pi), relating to emotion; and ethos (Eta), defined as character, credibility, and ethics. Lambda Pi Eta recognizes, fosters, and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement while stimulating interest in the communication discipline.

Goals

1. Recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies
2. Stimulate interest in the field of communication
3. Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors
4. Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication
5. Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students
6. Explore options for graduate education in communication studies

Eligibility

Student membership requires:

1.       a 3.0 cumulative GPA with 60 credit hours completed, and

2.       a 3.25 GPA for communication studies courses with 12 credit hours completed

Membership

To join Lambda Pi Eta, students must submit:

1.       a completed Application Form (attached) to Patrick Dodge in ICB 401, by Friday, November 9, 2018.

2.       an unofficial transcript (you can get this on UCD Access or from self-service printing machine on the second floor of ICB building), and

3.       a one-time national initiation fee, please check with Patrick Dodge in ICB 401 for details.
